A big thank you to Irish radio station Newstalk, which quoted a Stereo Story on Tuesday 21 February.

Stephen Andrew’s 2019 story about No Regrets by The Walker Brothers was part of the segment The Lyric’s The Thing, presented by musician Paul Harrington.

Each week Harrington discusses, and plays, on piano, a classic song on the morning program The Pat Kenny Show.

Harrington contacted Stephen Andrew last week, saying “I love your fantastic description of an incredible song and singer. I will be quoting a great deal from your text.”

On air, Harrington described Stephen’s words as ‘Perfect’. He then quoted two of Stephen’s paragraphs:

The Walker Brothers’ No Regrets reminds me of a massive mid-ocean storm. Wind and water everywhere – below (monstrous, rolling waves) and above (rain and spray in thick, torrential sheets). Caught in this liquid hell is a wooden clipper ship, a three master, with all sails in threads, bow rising and crashing, rising and crashing, seemingly at the will of the wild weather.

Centred in this scene is a stoic sailor, vocalist Scott Walker, feet planted immovably on the shiny deck, strong hands on the handles of the wheel, eyes fixed forward in a resolute, defiant, distant stare.

Harrington also spoke about The Walker Brothers (who were neither brothers nor originally surnamed Walker) and the song’s writer, Tom Rush (whose middle name was Walker).

The segment is not downloaded after the program as a podcast but you can read Stephen’s original story, and listen to his own narration of the story and performance of the song, right here on our website.
